Rattlesnake Safety
Rattlesnakes are the only dangerous snake to people in the San Francisco Bay Area, but they do not want to bite you.
Snake bites happen when people accidentally step on them or attempt to kill them. Biting is the snake’s last line of defense against predators. If you see a rattlesnake, just give it lots of space, and you can both go on with your day.
A rattlesnake relies on camouflage to protect itself from harm, and to hunt successfully. This means it has great camouflage. This camo works so well that it is hypothesized that they evolved a rattle in the Pleistocene as a way avoid getting stepped on by large animals.
If a rattlesnake see you getting to close, they will shake their tail as a warning so you don’t accidentally step on them. Snakes are just an inch or two tall, and they are full of tiny bones. If you were to step on a snake, you would break their ribs and possibly, spine.
How to stay safe when in outside spaces: Always know where your hands and feet are going
-Stay on trails. Avoid walking through brushy or grassy areas.
-Wear boots and long lose pants. Never wear sandals or go barefoot.
-Be extra alert when moving wood, rocks or picking up sticks.
-Hike with a friend.
-Do not touch a freshly killed snake. Dead rattlesnakes can still inject venom.

If there is already a rattlesnake in your yard, call a professional to remove the snake.
